Permanent Makeup Artist Revealed: Meet the Microblading Expert Behind Flawless Results

March 07, 20232 min read

“What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” - Jane Goodall

Hi, Julia here! Just wanted to introduce myself to everyone, old and new!

The image depicts Julia Butler, a permanent makeup artist, sitting in her waiting room. The room is nicely decorated with light-colored walls, and there is a comfortable chair in a cozy room. Julia is dressed in black scrubs, and she has dark hair that falls loosely around her shoulders. She is looking straight at the camera with a friendly and confident expression on her face.

Hello Beautiful People! Let me help you find the look you'll love! 🫶🏼

🌾 I grew up in Remsen on my parents' farm, right down the road (like 10 min) from where I am now (I live in Barneveld).

⚽ In high school, I played most sports, but soccer was my favorite. I also played the saxophone in the marching band, and even for the cows at home sometimes! 🐄🎵

👩‍👦 I love spending time outdoors with my son Harlen, who is also very athletic and musically inclined—he loves singing and playing soccer! (Yes, he's basically my twin.)

🐶 We also have two morkies named Ted and Lokii, two cats that answer to KitKat and Little Cat. Oh, and don't forget Geoffrey our goldfish. 🐟

🎨 I've always been super creative—I used to paint and draw when I was younger.

💼 I had several jobs along the years, whether it was waitressing, caregiving as a CNA, working for a bank or running a dental office: I've done it all!

💉 When I discovered microblading, suddenly it felt like everything clicked into place. It instantly became my passion!

💪 My first step towards becoming an entrepreneur was getting my microblading certification in 2018 and then opening Prime Microblading & Beauty in 2019!

💋 Our services include not only traditional microblading but also powder brows and lip blushing as well—and they're all based on your specific needs! We also offer brow lamination, brow tint and waxing if you're looking for a less permanent option.

🌟 I love what I do because it allows me to change lives—and that's what life is all about, right?

😊 It makes me feel good knowing that when someone walks out of our studio, they're walking out feeling happier than they did when they walked in.

👋 I hope to see you soon!

Our goal is to ensure that you receive the best results from your treatment. To achieve this, your skin must be healthy, strong, and non-irritated.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent Makeup or PMU is also known as micro-pigmentation and is a method of inserting small amounts of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin to enhance facial features such as eyebrows, eyes, and lips and provide scar camouflage. It helps to replenish what time has taken away; gives back precious time you normally spend “putting on your face". It is also helpful to those who are allergic to conventional cosmetics, those with visual impairment, watery eyes, and those with unsteady or arthritic hands that have difficulty applying makeup.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a technique of superficial cosmetic tattooing performed specifically on the eyebrows. Like earlier methods of cosmetic tattooing, it is done by manually depositing pigment into the second layer of the skin (dermis). But what makes it truly unique is the hand tool used. The unique formation of needles allows the artist to create the look of real eyebrow hairs by tattooing very fine hair-like strokes on the skin. A process called Shading uses a hand tool to deposit a more solid wash of pigment amongst the bladed hair strokes for a fuller, deeper look.

What happens when I make a booking?

You will receive a consultation to determine the color and shape of the permanent makeup you desire. Factors such as your makeup style, skin tone, hair color, and desired outcome will be considered to determine the design of the permanent makeup that will be most flattering and suitable for you.

Can permanent makeup be performed on any skin type or complexion?

Permanent makeup is not advised for Fitzpatrick Skin type 1 (light blonde or redheads/translucent skin/light eyes). Due to the hypersensitivity and thinness of this skin type, it generally does not hold the color well and can bleed quite easily. Your technician will be able to discuss the best option for you during your visit.

How "permanent" is it, anyway?

Permanent makeup is long-lasting and can remain on the skin for 1 to 3 years depending on the color, placement, and your skin type. The most effective and safe removal option is laser tattoo removal, offered by specialists. If you have existing permanent makeup and need corrective work, you will be advised of your best options. PRIME Microblading & Beauty does not perform laser removal but is certified in saline removal service.

Does it fade or require any maintenance?

Over time, your permanent makeup will fade due to many factors such as natural skin exfoliation, sun exposure, medications, and the use of creams/chemicals. To maintain the color and shape it is advisable to touch up the treated area every 1 to 2 years. A good indication of needing maintenance is when you start having to add to your permanent makeup with a pencil or other cosmetics.

Is the procedure painful?

You may experience a minor and tolerable degree of scratching/pricking during the procedure.  A topical anesthetic is used to reduce discomfort and promote relaxation before and during service. The treated area may be slightly tender immediately following the procedure.  Tenderness will diminish within a few days post-treatment.

Are there any risks?

Every cosmetic skin procedure involves a very small degree of risk and, although exceedingly uncommon, it is important that you understand and accept the rare risks involved with Permanent Cosmetic Makeup- these include possible infection, allergic reaction, improper placement, dissatisfaction with the result, permanency, and difficulty of removal. An individual’s informed decision to undergo any cosmetic procedure is based upon a comparison of the risks to potential benefits, alternatives, and costs. We take every necessary step and precaution to minimize the risks associated with permanent makeup.

What Can I Expect After a Microblading Procedure?

The healing process after a microblading procedure varies from client to client based on many factors. This could include, but is not limited to: the artist's technique, pigments used, aftercare instructions, whether or not shading was done, as well as just overall how someone's body and skin react to the procedure. Some of the most common things clients can expect after a microblading procedure are:

  • Tenderness in the area

  • Pink or redness around the affected area

  • Swelling Thickening and darkening of the area

  • Moderate to thick scabbing 3-4 days after the procedure

  • Scabs will begin to flake off anytime between days 5 - 10

  • After scabs flake off, pigment color and strokes will look light, grey, and blurry

  • After the area is fully healed (4 weeks after the procedure) the pigment will return to full color

I already have permanent makeup from a prior procedure. Can it be improved or updated?

This will depend on the appearance and design of the previous permanent makeup and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  You can send clear pictures to Prime Microblading for analysis and we can give you a clear answer based on the pictures we receive and follow up with a consultation if necessary.

Am I a good candidate?

Unfortunately, not all clients are good candidates for permanent makeup due to the existence of certain contraindicated skin conditions or pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a contraindicated skin condition you may not retain color well and thus may not be entirely satisfied with your outcome.

What are the contraindicated skin conditions?

The following skin conditions compromise the outcome of a procedure:

  • Ingrown hairs and open bumps on eyebrow-injured skin cannot be tattooed

  • Eczema (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Psoriasis (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Dermatitis (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Rosacea (chronic acne-like skin indicated by redness)

  • Severely oily skin on eyebrows (microblading hair strokes will appear more blended, solid, or not retain at all)

  • Large pores on your forehead & in the eyebrow area (color will blur/blend in large pores resulting in a powdered look)

  • Have moles/raised areas/piercings in or around the brow/eye area (anything raised or indented will not retain color)

  • Deep wrinkles in the brow area (the hair strokes will not lay properly in the creases, giving the eyebrows an uneven look)

  • Hair transplant for your eyebrows (color will not take in the scar tissue where the plugs were placed)

  • Shingles (permanent makeup should not be performed as the procedure could cause a flare-up)

What are the contraindicated medical conditions?

The following medical conditions may prohibit you from having a procedure:

  • Pregnancy or nursing

  • Hemophilia

  • Heart Conditions/Pacemaker/Defibrillator

  • Body runs hot (increased bleeding)

  • Bleeding disorders

  • Thyroid condition and taking medication for this condition (Hypo, Hyperthyroidism, Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s)

  • Autoimmune Disorder such as LUPUS or Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (MS, RA, Lupus, or the like)

  • Trichotillomania (Compulsive pulling of body hair)

  • Upper or lower eyelid surgery

*Please reach out if any concerns, these conditions don’t necessarily eliminate you as a candidate. Many times, a doctor's approval is all that is needed.

Can the use of any products or medications impact my results?

Use of the following products may compromise the outcome of a procedure and are contraindicated:

  • Accutane or Retin-A (acne medication) - Wait 1 year before the procedure.

  • Retinol or Vitamin A- Use must be discontinued for 1 month prior to the procedure.

  • Latisse or any eyelash/eyebrow growth conditioner - discontinued for 6 months prior to the procedure.

  • Glaucoma Eye Drops

  • Triflusal (Disgren)

  • Clopidogrel (Plavix)

  • Prasugrel (Effient)

  • Ticagrelor (Brilinta)

  • Ticlopidine (Ticlid)

  • Cilostazol (Pletal)

  • Vorapaxar (Zontivity)

  • Dipyridamole (Persantine)

  • warfarin (Coumadin)

I have an amazing tan right now - can I still have a procedure?

If you are excessively tanned or have a sunburn, a procedure is not recommended. Wait for the skin to fully heal and return to your natural complexion before going ahead.
