5 Great Common Questions People Ask Me About Permanent Makeup

September 20, 20224 min read

“Beauty is about enhancing what you have. Let yourself shine through.” - Janelle Monáe

Introduction:

Hi Beautiful, I’m Julia, the owner and certified permanent makeup artist here at PRIME Microblading and Beauty. No matter if your eyebrows are naturally wild or have been victims of over-plucking. Perfectly shaped and groomed eyebrows are possible to achieve.

So, if you’re struggling to keep your brows neat or can’t quite nail that perfect arch, it may be time to seek some help.

By learning the correct methods and techniques for shaping your eyebrows, you’ll be able to create the most flattering appearance for your face. So, before you go pulling out the tweezers and start attacking every little hair, schedule a free consult with me!

I can show you how to shape eyebrows like a pro, from finding the perfect shape for your face to selecting the right tools. These are some of the commonly asked questions I hear in my consultations.

Is cosmetic tattooing painful?

Here are 5 Common questions clients ask before deciding to get their eyebrows or lips enhanced.

1. Is cosmetic tattooing painful?

Although the procedure can take upward of 2 hours, most people report only feeling minor pressure or discomfort and less pain than a typical tattoo due to the use of a numbing cream.

Of course, this will depend on your own personal tolerance to pain. Some level of pain or discomfort can be expected, but I work hard to keep you comfortable with multiple numbing agents such as lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine with epinephrine to reduce any swelling.

2. What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup refers to cosmetic tattoos that help you recreate your favorite makeup looks in a semi-permanent manner. Chances are, you've already heard of microblading.

Thanks to an exponentially exploding interest in brows over the past few years, the eyebrow-tattooing technique has gone mainstream. But brows are just the beginning. You can also get just-bitten pink lips, or even faux freckles.

Though this is a wonderful option for those who crave a daily makeup look that's fuss-free, as cosmetic ink gets more common, it's important to remember that the key term in semi-permanent makeup is "permanent."

As seamless and easy as it sounds, in the end, you are still making a permanent decision — at least one that'll last for a few years.

3. How many treatments will I need?

How many treatments will I need?

First-time clients for eyebrows and lips can expect at least two visits to achieve their ideal look. After the first session, I recommend a touch-up in 6-8 weeks.

This visit allows the opportunity to ensure optimal healed results and make any adjustments necessary. Afterwards, yearly Color Boosts are suggested to maintain your investment and its vibrancy.

The timing of this can vary per client, so to help alleviate the financial aspect I offer these services at a discounted rate depending on how long it has been from initial service.

As always, if you are on the fence or just need more answers, PRIME Microblading offers free consultations to everyone.

4. Is permanent makeup safe?

Here are some guidelines your artist should be following to ensure there are clean and sanitized conditions and you avoid all risks:

  • Everything that touches you during the procedure should be disposed of after the appointment.

  • All tools, most importantly needles, needle chambers and needle covers need to be factory sterilized and individually packaged before they’re used on you.

  • Your artist should be strictly using chemical sterilization. This ensures that the equipment is free of microorganisms,  bacteria and viruses.

  • Your artist must be wearing disposable gloves and face mask that is changed before and after your procedure.

Getting your permanent makeup done whether it is Microblading, Combo Brows, Powder Brows, or Lip Blushing, it is completely safe as long as your salon and artist adhere to all of their Health Department and Center for Disease Control guidelines.

5. How much does permanent makeup cost? Is it worth it?

Cosmetic tattoos can definitely make or break one’s look, and let's face it - it is an investment.

Here at PRIME Microblading & Beauty, we aim to have accessible and affordable cosmetic tattoo services. Sometimes called pmu or permanent makeup; faux freckles, microblading, powder brows, combination brows, etc.

Client with Color Boosts

New clients should expect at least two visits to achieve their desired look. The first session for Microblading or Powder Brows begins at $400, with a 6-8 week touch-up recommended for $50.

Combination Brows (includes Microblading & Powder Brow technique) is $450 with a $75 touch-up. Afterward, yearly Color Boosts are recommended (Our prices have a loyalty discount ❤️) - this can depend on a multitude of factors as some clients need to be seen more often than one year, others can go longer.

Lip Blushing is $500 with a $75 touch-up with the same maintenance as mentioned above.

Closing thoughts

You wear your face every day - think about the time and frustration you'll save by knowing you look flawless with permanent makeup.

Regardless, it's important to do your research and ensure that you choose the best artist and value in your area. Ask questions and make sure you vibe with your artist! Trust is everything. 😊

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

The Owner/Artist Julia sitting in soft chair open to questions, next to a sign Hello Beautiful

Our goal is to ensure that you receive the best results from your treatment. To achieve this, your skin must be healthy, strong, and non-irritated.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent Makeup or PMU is also known as micro-pigmentation and is a method of inserting small amounts of pigment into the dermal layer of the skin to enhance facial features such as eyebrows, eyes, and lips and provide scar camouflage. It helps to replenish what time has taken away; gives back precious time you normally spend “putting on your face". It is also helpful to those who are allergic to conventional cosmetics, those with visual impairment, watery eyes, and those with unsteady or arthritic hands that have difficulty applying makeup.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a technique of superficial cosmetic tattooing performed specifically on the eyebrows. Like earlier methods of cosmetic tattooing, it is done by manually depositing pigment into the second layer of the skin (dermis). But what makes it truly unique is the hand tool used. The unique formation of needles allows the artist to create the look of real eyebrow hairs by tattooing very fine hair-like strokes on the skin. A process called Shading uses a hand tool to deposit a more solid wash of pigment amongst the bladed hair strokes for a fuller, deeper look.

What happens when I make a booking?

You will receive a consultation to determine the color and shape of the permanent makeup you desire. Factors such as your makeup style, skin tone, hair color, and desired outcome will be considered to determine the design of the permanent makeup that will be most flattering and suitable for you.

Can permanent makeup be performed on any skin type or complexion?

Permanent makeup is not advised for Fitzpatrick Skin type 1 (light blonde or redheads/translucent skin/light eyes). Due to the hypersensitivity and thinness of this skin type, it generally does not hold the color well and can bleed quite easily. Your technician will be able to discuss the best option for you during your visit.

How "permanent" is it, anyway?

Permanent makeup is long-lasting and can remain on the skin for 1 to 3 years depending on the color, placement, and your skin type. The most effective and safe removal option is laser tattoo removal, offered by specialists. If you have existing permanent makeup and need corrective work, you will be advised of your best options. PRIME Microblading & Beauty does not perform laser removal but is certified in saline removal service.

Does it fade or require any maintenance?

Over time, your permanent makeup will fade due to many factors such as natural skin exfoliation, sun exposure, medications, and the use of creams/chemicals. To maintain the color and shape it is advisable to touch up the treated area every 1 to 2 years. A good indication of needing maintenance is when you start having to add to your permanent makeup with a pencil or other cosmetics.

Is the procedure painful?

You may experience a minor and tolerable degree of scratching/pricking during the procedure.  A topical anesthetic is used to reduce discomfort and promote relaxation before and during service. The treated area may be slightly tender immediately following the procedure.  Tenderness will diminish within a few days post-treatment.

Are there any risks?

Every cosmetic skin procedure involves a very small degree of risk and, although exceedingly uncommon, it is important that you understand and accept the rare risks involved with Permanent Cosmetic Makeup- these include possible infection, allergic reaction, improper placement, dissatisfaction with the result, permanency, and difficulty of removal. An individual’s informed decision to undergo any cosmetic procedure is based upon a comparison of the risks to potential benefits, alternatives, and costs. We take every necessary step and precaution to minimize the risks associated with permanent makeup.

What Can I Expect After a Microblading Procedure?

The healing process after a microblading procedure varies from client to client based on many factors. This could include, but is not limited to: the artist's technique, pigments used, aftercare instructions, whether or not shading was done, as well as just overall how someone's body and skin react to the procedure. Some of the most common things clients can expect after a microblading procedure are:

  • Tenderness in the area

  • Pink or redness around the affected area

  • Swelling Thickening and darkening of the area

  • Moderate to thick scabbing 3-4 days after the procedure

  • Scabs will begin to flake off anytime between days 5 - 10

  • After scabs flake off, pigment color and strokes will look light, grey, and blurry

  • After the area is fully healed (4 weeks after the procedure) the pigment will return to full color

I already have permanent makeup from a prior procedure. Can it be improved or updated?

This will depend on the appearance and design of the previous permanent makeup and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  You can send clear pictures to Prime Microblading for analysis and we can give you a clear answer based on the pictures we receive and follow up with a consultation if necessary.

Am I a good candidate?

Unfortunately, not all clients are good candidates for permanent makeup due to the existence of certain contraindicated skin conditions or pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a contraindicated skin condition you may not retain color well and thus may not be entirely satisfied with your outcome.

What are the contraindicated skin conditions?

The following skin conditions compromise the outcome of a procedure:

  • Ingrown hairs and open bumps on eyebrow-injured skin cannot be tattooed

  • Eczema (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Psoriasis (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Dermatitis (constant flaking/itching/irritation/shedding of skin)

  • Rosacea (chronic acne-like skin indicated by redness)

  • Severely oily skin on eyebrows (microblading hair strokes will appear more blended, solid, or not retain at all)

  • Large pores on your forehead & in the eyebrow area (color will blur/blend in large pores resulting in a powdered look)

  • Have moles/raised areas/piercings in or around the brow/eye area (anything raised or indented will not retain color)

  • Deep wrinkles in the brow area (the hair strokes will not lay properly in the creases, giving the eyebrows an uneven look)

  • Hair transplant for your eyebrows (color will not take in the scar tissue where the plugs were placed)

  • Shingles (permanent makeup should not be performed as the procedure could cause a flare-up)

What are the contraindicated medical conditions?

The following medical conditions may prohibit you from having a procedure:

  • Pregnancy or nursing

  • Hemophilia

  • Heart Conditions/Pacemaker/Defibrillator

  • Body runs hot (increased bleeding)

  • Bleeding disorders

  • Thyroid condition and taking medication for this condition (Hypo, Hyperthyroidism, Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s)

  • Autoimmune Disorder such as LUPUS or Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (MS, RA, Lupus, or the like)

  • Trichotillomania (Compulsive pulling of body hair)

  • Upper or lower eyelid surgery

*Please reach out if any concerns, these conditions don’t necessarily eliminate you as a candidate. Many times, a doctor's approval is all that is needed.

Can the use of any products or medications impact my results?

Use of the following products may compromise the outcome of a procedure and are contraindicated:

  • Accutane or Retin-A (acne medication) - Wait 1 year before the procedure.

  • Retinol or Vitamin A- Use must be discontinued for 1 month prior to the procedure.

  • Latisse or any eyelash/eyebrow growth conditioner - discontinued for 6 months prior to the procedure.

  • Glaucoma Eye Drops

  • Triflusal (Disgren)

  • Clopidogrel (Plavix)

  • Prasugrel (Effient)

  • Ticagrelor (Brilinta)

  • Ticlopidine (Ticlid)

  • Cilostazol (Pletal)

  • Vorapaxar (Zontivity)

  • Dipyridamole (Persantine)

  • warfarin (Coumadin)

I have an amazing tan right now - can I still have a procedure?

If you are excessively tanned or have a sunburn, a procedure is not recommended. Wait for the skin to fully heal and return to your natural complexion before going ahead.
